Welcome at the pages of the International Snoezelen Association (ISNA)!

What is ISNA?

The “International Snoezelen Association” (ISNA) was founded in 2002 by Ad Verheul and Prof. Dr. Mertens. The idea to work together to research and to underpin the effects of Snoezelen had developed prior to founding the ISNA.

ISNA is aiming for an increasing cooperation between representatives from all over the word, for publications of technical articles on websites, in magazines and books, for the creation of a training network, for the development of methods and contents in various application fields, for further research into the effects of Snoezelen on hyperactive behaviour, promoting body awareness, wellbeing and relaxation, to name but a few.

ISNA now has more than 100 members from 24 nations, who watch with interest and support the publication of technically correct information, implementation of training measures and spreading of the concept.

What is Snoezelen?

Snoezelen is derived from the words “snuffeln” (to sniff, to snuffle) and “doezelen” (to doze, to snooze).
It was developed in the Netherlands in the seventies by institutions caring for severely disabled people. Behind Snoezelen is a multi functional concept: In a purposely designed room (mostly a white room) the use of light and sound elements, scents and music initiate sensual sensations. These have both relaxing and activating effects on the different perception areas. The specific design directs and arranges the stimuli; it creates interest, brings back memories and guides relationships. Snoezelen induces wellbeing, in a calm atmosphere fear will be taken away, people feel secure. Snoezelen is therapy as well as promotion and is used for all stages of development (from toddlers to old people) (Mertens in: Brockhaus Cyclopedia. ed. 25, 2006²¹, 429).
